The Kumbali team is a diverse and experienced group with extensive knowledge of the hospitality industry in Malawi and beyond. Comprised of individuals from various cultural backgrounds, they bring a rich tapestry of perspectives to their work. Their collective expertise, gained through years of experience both locally and internationally, ensures a high level of professionalism and a deep understanding of the needs and expectations of guests.
Maureen & Guy Pickering
Founders
Guy & Maureen Pickering founded Nature's Gift in 1994 as a dairy farm. They have since built the Kumbali brand and remain active in the management of it.
Ian D'heygere
General Manager
Ian is an experienced professional in the tourism industry in Malawi. He has managed several properties around the country, including the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre and Chintheche Inn. Ian currently oversees Kumbali's lodges and farm.
Richard Chimwala
Kumbali Country Lodge Manager
Richard has close to 30 years of experience working in the hotel industry. He worked as a GM at Mvuu Camp & Lodge in Liwonde National Park, as well as at Mkulumadzi in Majete National Park. Richard is also a qualified safari guide.
Elizabeth 'Lizzie' George
Food, Beverage & Events
Lizzie has over a decade of experience working in the tourism industry, having worked in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi. At Kumbali she is in charge of kitchens, restaurant, bar and events.
Geraldine Pinto
Front Office
Geraldine originally hails from Blantyre, but moved to Lilongwe to fill this position. She previously worked at Serendib Hotel. Geraldine handles all of our enquiries and will make sure your needs are understood and communicates it to the team.
Bjorn Pretorius
Operations
Bjorn was born in South Africa but has called Malawi his home since 2011. He has a military background as well as safari guiding. His skillset is essential to running the security, fleet and other operations for the Kumbali brand.
Davie Maonga
Reception
Davie has been with Kumbali almost since the beginning. He knows the property in and out, and to many of our returning guests, he is a familiar face. In his spare time, Davie is a keen football coach and community leader.
Lawrence Kabudula
Finance
Lawrence got his credentials from the esteemed Malawi College of Accountancy. Having worked at a few other companies in the past, he is now in charge of all things finance at Kumbali.
Stinga Kaphamtengo

Stinga plays a pivotal role in maintaining our lake property as one of the premier lodges along the entire lakeshore. His expertise was crucial in identifying the land that ultimately became the renowned Lake Retreat.
