Quick getaways

Whether you are a dedicated volunteer seeking a weekend reset, an expat looking to reclaim your sense of wonder, or a resident professional in need of a brief escape from the city, our Short Escapes are designed to maximize every hour of your time away. We understand that your schedule might be tight, but your curiosity isn't. Drawing on decades of local logistical expertise, we’ve curated a collection of high-impact journeys—from the ancient echoes of the Dedza Rock Art and the granite peaks of Mount Mulanje to the untamed riverbanks of Liwonde and South Luangwa. Whether it’s a sunrise hike up Nkhoma, a tranquil day at our Lake Retreat, or a quick dash into the bush for a world-class safari, these bite-sized adventures offer the perfect balance of Kumbali’s signature comfort and the raw, authentic beauty of the "Warm Heart of Africa."

All prices quoted are indicative only. Final costs are subject to change based on the number of guests, room sharing preferences, seasonal rates, and specific accommodation availability at the time of booking.

The Day Tripper: From Dawn to Dusk

Our Day Tripper excursions are crafted for those who want to swap the city bustle for Malawi’s natural beauty without the commitment of an overnight stay. To keep your journey seamless, every trip includes reliable round-trip transport, a knowledgeable driver-guide, and a fresh Kumbali lunch. While we don't have fixed scheduled departures yet, we specialize in bespoke arrangements; simply let us know your preferred date and group size, as the final cost is tailored to the number of explorers joining the trip.

  • The Experience: Just a 45-minute drive from the city, Bunda Hill offers one of the most authentic local experiences in Central Malawi. This "short but steep" trek is a favorite for Lilongwe residents—some climb for physical fitness, while many others visit for spiritual reflection. It’s a heart-pumping climb that rewards you with 360-degree views of the surrounding plains.

  • Vibe: Active, soulful, and deeply Malawian..

  • Duration: 3–4 hours (including drive time).

Weekend Warrior: 1 to 3 Night Escapes

Sometimes, a quick overnight is all it takes to reset; other times, you need a few days to truly disappear. Our "Short Escapes" are designed as flexible building blocks. While the itineraries below are perfect for a single night away and are priced for the same, every one of these trips can be extended to 2 or 3 nights if you want more time to hike, track wildlife, or simply soak in the silence. We handle the logistics, the transport, and the gear—you just choose the duration that fits your schedule.

  • The Experience: Escape to one of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous rainforests. Spend your days hiking under ancient, towering trees in search of rare orchids and Samango monkeys. This trip is easily extended to 2 or 3 nights for those who want to reach the higher ridges or enjoy dedicated birdwatching sessions in the cool mountain air.

  • What to Pack: A warm fleece (it gets chilly at night!), sturdy hiking boots, binoculars, a raincoat, and long trousers to protect against undergrowth.

  • Vibe: Refreshing, emerald-green, and peaceful.

The Explorer: 2 to 4 Night Immersions

Some landscapes require more than a weekend to truly uncover. Our 2 to 4-night immersions are designed for those ready to leave the city far behind and sink into the rhythm of the wild. As always, these itineraries are flexible—stay longer, explore deeper, and let the landscape dictate the pace. Prices quoted are for 2 night stays.

  • The Experience: Liwonde is Malawi’s premier safari destination. With 2 to 4 nights, you can move beyond the standard game drive. Enjoy sunrise boat safaris to see elephants and hippos at eye-level, evening drives in search of cheetahs and lions, and quiet moments watching the river life from the lodge. A 3-night stay allows for a more relaxed pace and a higher chance of spotting the elusive Black Rhino.

  • What to Pack: Binoculars, a good zoom camera, neutral-toned safari clothing, a warm jacket for night drives, and high-SPF sunscreen.

  • Vibe: Classic safari elegance and river-based wildlife encounters.

The South Luangwa Series: 3-Night Zambian Safaris

Just a few hours from Lilongwe lies the Luangwa Valley, a world-class wilderness where the "Big Five" roam across vast floodplains. We’ve streamlined the international border crossing and transport to offer three distinct ways to experience this iconic park. Whether you are looking for a rugged bush adventure or world-class luxury, these 3-night packages include all transfers, meals, park fees, and expert-led game drives.

  • The Product: Designed for volunteers and explorers who want the "real" Luangwa experience without the frills. We utilize well-established, comfortable camps located just outside the park gates, such as Croc Valley or Msandile River Lodge. You’ll sleep in safari tents or simple chalets, falling asleep to the sound of hippos in the river, with full access to the park’s incredible wildlife.

  • What to Pack: A sturdy headlamp, a power bank, a warm sweater for open-vehicle night drives, and plenty of insect repellent.

  • Vibe: Authentic, social, and rugged.
