As we step into 2024, it is the 20th anniversary of Kumbali Country Lodge offering its exceptional hospitality. Let's take a stroll down memory lane to explore the captivating history of Kumbali and the remarkable journey undertaken by the visionary duo, Guy and Maureen Pickering.
The roots of Kumbali trace back to 1986 when the Canadian government established the Capital Hill Dairy Farm in Malawi. However, it wasn't until 1997 that the Pickerings, renowned for their prowess in tobacco and dairy farming, assumed control of the struggling farm. Facing a daunting task upon their arrival in July 1998, the Pickerings were undeterred by the farm's challenges – milk production had plummeted, and essential infrastructure was lacking. Their vision was clear – to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
With unwavering determination and tireless effort, the Pickerings set about the transformation of the farm. What once were government C-class buildings became the foundation for a flourishing lodge.
In 2004, Kumbali Country Lodge officially opened its doors with 11 rooms. The journey continued, and Madonna's visit in 2006 inspired further expansion where the lodge center evolved into the double-story thatched building housing the restaurant, reception, and patio we see today.
As Kumbali Country Lodge celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024, it stands as a testament to the Pickerings' unwavering spirit and their ability to turn adversity into opportunity. This milestone is not merely a celebration; it's a testament to two decades marked by growth, adaptation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
